Magnetic mesh fly curtains
The neatest and best-sealing fly curtain for a home door. Two woven mesh panels meet on a magnetic centre seam - walk through and the magnets snap shut silently behind you. Hook-and-loop tape holds it around the frame, so there is no drilling and it takes about 15 minutes to fit. Available in white or charcoal.
PVC strip fly curtains
A British-made PVC strip curtain is the simple, low-cost way to screen a doorway. Overlapping strips hang from self-adhesive hooks along the top - you walk straight through and they fall back together behind you. Ideal for back doors, utility rooms and anywhere you want quick, fuss-free access.
Chain & metal fly curtains
An aluminium chain-link curtain is the hard-wearing choice for both commercial and domestic doorways. The hanging chains break up the opening to deter flying insects while letting people and trolleys pass through. Easy to wipe clean and built to last - a favourite for commercial kitchens, garages and outbuildings.
Which fly curtain is right for you?
Magnetic mesh - the all-rounder for home doors
If you want the tidiest look and the most complete insect seal, choose a magnetic mesh curtain. The two panels close themselves on a magnetic seam, so there is never a gap left open. It is the best choice for back doors, french doors and patios used as the main route to the garden, and you can see through the mesh clearly from inside. Charcoal almost disappears against dark frames; white suits white uPVC.
PVC strip - the budget and quick-fit option
A strip curtain is the cheapest way to screen a doorway and the fastest to fit - just stick the hooks along the top and hang the strips. Great for utility rooms, back doors and sheds, or anywhere you want a no-fuss barrier you can walk through with your hands full.
Chain & metal - tough, wipe-clean, commercial-friendly
Aluminium chain curtains are the most hard-wearing. They suit commercial kitchens, garages and outbuildings where the curtain takes a lot of traffic and needs wiping down. Plenty of homeowners choose them for the durable, industrial look too.
Measure your doorway first
Measure the width of the opening edge to edge, and the height from the floor to the top of the frame. For magnetic curtains, choose a size the same as or slightly larger than your opening - the tape sticks around the frame and any excess mesh hangs naturally.

What is a fly curtain?
A fly curtain is a screen that hangs over a doorway to keep flies and insects out while still letting you walk straight through. There are three main kinds: a magnetic mesh curtain (two mesh panels that snap shut behind you on magnets), a PVC strip curtain (overlapping clear plastic strips you push through), and a chain curtain (hanging aluminium chains, often used in commercial kitchens). All three let people and pets pass freely while blocking insects.
Which fly curtain is best for a house door?
For a back door, patio or french door used as the main route to the garden, a magnetic mesh curtain is usually the best choice - it seals itself shut, looks neat and you can see through it. A PVC strip curtain is the budget option and fits any doorway in minutes. A chain curtain suits commercial kitchens, garages and outbuildings where a tougher, wipe-clean barrier is wanted.
Do fly curtains keep flies out?
Yes. A magnetic mesh curtain closes completely behind you so there is no gap for insects. PVC strip curtains overlap so the strips fall back together after you walk through. Chain curtains break up the doorway and deter flying insects from entering, which is why they are common in food premises. For the most complete insect seal on a home door, the magnetic mesh curtain is the strongest option.
Do I need to drill to fit a fly curtain?
No drilling is needed for our magnetic mesh curtains - they fit with strong adhesive hook-and-loop tape around the door frame, and the tape removes cleanly at the end of summer. PVC strip curtains fit with self-adhesive hooks along the top. Chain curtains hang from a rail fixed above the doorway.
What is the difference between a fly curtain and a fly screen?
They are the same idea - "fly curtain" usually means the walk-through hanging kind (mesh, strip or chain), while "fly screen" is the broader term that also covers framed and panel screens. If you want something you simply walk through with no frame, a fly curtain is what you are after.
Can I get a fly curtain for patio or french doors?
Yes. A magnetic mesh curtain fits across the full width of patio and french door openings and snaps shut behind you. For a complete buyer’s guide covering panel, roller and magnetic options sized for wide patio openings, see our dedicated patio door fly screens page.
Are chain fly curtains only for commercial use?
No - aluminium chain curtains work just as well on a domestic back door, garage or outbuilding. They are popular in commercial kitchens because they are hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean, but plenty of homeowners choose them for the look and durability.
