View DetailsBuyer's guide - choosing the right patio fly screen
1. Measure the opening first
Inside the frame, edge to edge for the width. Floor (or threshold) to the top of the frame for the height. Patio openings vary hugely - anywhere from 150cm up to 320cm wide is normal - so measuring beats guessing every time.
2. Pick a panel door for most patios
Panel doors are our best-selling patio screen and the right starting point for most customers. Rigid panels hang from a top rail and you walk through them - the panels fall back into place behind you. Looks smarter than a magnetic curtain, lasts longer, doesn't flap in the wind. Sizes 100, 120, 145, 170 and 200cm cover almost any sliding patio. For openings wider than 200cm, the Wide Panel Door (charcoal) handles up to 190cm - for anything beyond, email us with your measurements.
3. Pick magnetic for french doors or constant walk-through
If your patio is the main route to the garden - kids running in and out, dog using it as a doorway - the magnetic walk-through closes itself behind you. Magnetic is also the best fit for french doors, where you need the screen to span both leaves.
4. Match the colour to your frame
Charcoal disappears against dark uPVC, anthracite and aluminium frames. White suits white uPVC. Both colours block insects equally - it's purely cosmetic.
5. Consider exposure to wind
Panel doors hold steady in any wind. Magnetic screens hold in normal breezes but can flap on very exposed sites - if your patio catches the wind, go panel.
6. Check for pets
Cats and dogs adapt to both panel screens (push the panel aside) and magnetic screens (push through the seal) within a day or two. Neither is designed to contain pets - they're insect barriers.

Patio door fly screen FAQs
What is the best fly screen for sliding patio doors?
A panel door is our most popular and best-selling option for sliding patios. Rigid panels hang from a top rail with weighted hems holding them in place - you walk through the overlapping panels and they fall back into position. Steadier than a magnetic curtain, looks neater, and lasts longer. Sizes from 100cm to 200cm wide in white or charcoal, plus a Wide Panel Door for openings beyond standard. For french doors or patios with constant walk-through traffic, the Magnetic Flyscreen Door or Adjustable Magnetic Screen are the alternatives.
Will a fly screen work on french doors?
Yes. French doors typically open inward or outward as a pair, and a magnetic walk-through screen fits across the whole opening on the outside (or inside) frame. The Magnetic Flyscreen Door (Charcoal) at 130x215cm or the Adjustable Magnetic Screen up to 200cm both work well for standard french door openings.
What about bi-fold patio doors?
Bi-fold doors are usually wider than standard openings and need a screen that can span the full width. The Bi-Fold Wide Span Flyscreen is designed for openings up to 250cm wide and uses a magnetic strip down the centre so you can walk straight through.
Do I need to drill into my patio door frame?
No. All our magnetic patio door screens fit using strong adhesive hook-and-loop tape - no drilling, no screws, no damage to the frame. Panel screens fit with a top rail screwed above the frame and weighted hems holding the panels in place. The tape removes cleanly at the end of the season if you prefer to take the screen down for winter.
How do I measure my patio door for a fly screen?
Measure the width of the opening from inside edge of frame to inside edge of frame, and the height from the floor (or threshold) to the top of the frame on the inside. For the magnetic screens, choose a size that is the same as or slightly larger than your opening - the tape sticks to the frame around the edge, and any excess mesh hangs naturally. Email us a photo with measurements if you are unsure.
Can pets walk through a magnetic patio door screen?
Yes - most cats and dogs learn to push through the magnetic seal within a day or two, especially if you train them with a treat. The magnets snap shut after they pass through, keeping insects out. Magnetic screens are not designed to keep determined pets in - for that you would need a framed door.
Will the fly screen blow open in the wind?
The magnetic seal holds in normal breezes. In strong wind the screen can move, but the magnets re-engage as the wind drops. For very exposed coastal or upper-floor patios, a panel door (weighted rigid panels on a top rail) is steadier than a magnetic screen.
What colour fly screen looks best on a patio door?
Charcoal mesh is the most popular for patio doors - it almost disappears against a dark frame and you can see through it clearly from inside. White looks clean against white uPVC frames. Both are available across our magnetic door range.
Can I leave the fly screen up all year?
You can, but most customers take magnetic screens down between October and April when insects are not active. The hook-and-loop tape stays on the frame ready for next season - just stick the screen back on when you need it. This also extends the life of the mesh.
