Buyer's guide: choosing the right fly screen door
1. Measure the opening first
Width inside the frame, height from floor or threshold to the inside top. Round up to the nearest centimetre. Most products are oversized slightly so they overlap the frame, the spec page shows the fit range.
2. Decide between walk-through and fitted
If the door is used many times a day, a walk-through fly curtain (magnetic, strip or chain) is the right call. The screen parts as you pass through and falls back behind you. For doors used occasionally a lightweight magnetic or roller door gives a neater fit.
3. Pick the right product for your doorway type
Standard back or side door: Lightweight Flyscreen Door or Magnetic Flyscreen Door (White) for under £30.
Sliding patio door: Panel Door from 100cm to 200cm wide, or the Wide Panel Door for openings beyond 200cm.
French doors: Magnetic Flyscreen Door (Charcoal) or the Adjustable Magnetic Screen up to 200cm.
Bi-fold openings: Bi-Fold Wide Span Flyscreen up to 250cm wide.
Kitchen, restaurant or food prep: Aluminium Hinged Self-Closing Door, Environmental Health compliant.
Caravan or motorhome: Caravan Flyscreen Door designed for narrow caravan openings.
4. Match the colour to your frame
Charcoal mesh is the most popular for dark uPVC, anthracite and aluminium frames, it almost disappears against the frame and lets you see through it clearly from inside. White suits white uPVC. Both block insects equally, the choice is purely cosmetic.
5. Check for pets and exposure
Magnetic screens hold in normal breezes and most pets push through with a day or two of training. For very exposed coastal patios or households with boisterous dogs, panel doors are steadier and more durable.

Fly screen doors FAQs
Which fly screen door is best for my home?
For most UK domestic back and side doors, a lightweight or strip fly screen door works well: they fit with adhesive hook and loop tape and walk straight through. For patio or french doors see our dedicated patio doors guide. For kitchens, restaurants and commercial premises that need Environmental Health compliance, the aluminium hinged self-closing door is the right choice.
Do I need to drill into my door frame?
No. Lightweight, strip, chain and magnetic doors fit with self-adhesive hook and loop tape supplied with the screen. Roller doors and aluminium hinged doors do use screws into the frame. Each product page explains which method is used.
How do I measure my doorway for a fly screen?
Measure the width of the opening from inside edge of frame to inside edge of frame, and the height from the floor or threshold to the inside of the top frame. Round measurements up to the nearest centimetre. If you are between sizes or unsure, email a photo plus the measurements to info@flyscreenqueen.co.uk and James will recommend the right product.
Will a fly screen door let air through?
Yes, all our screens use fine mesh that is highly permeable to air while blocking flies, wasps, mosquitoes and other insects. Roller and aluminium hinged doors give the most unobstructed air flow as they have full open-mesh panels.
How long do fly screen doors last?
Most domestic screens last 5 to 10 seasons with reasonable care. Hook and loop tape can be replaced if it loses adhesion. Aluminium hinged doors and roller doors are built to last 10+ years in domestic use. Replacement mesh and parts are available on the Screens and Parts page.
Can I order a fly screen door in a non-standard size?
Yes for selected products. The Wide Panel Door is available bespoke up to extra-wide openings. For mesh material you can buy by the metre and cut to fit. Email a photo and the measurements to info@flyscreenqueen.co.uk for advice.
